I can't handle sarcasm said in a different language. It's mental
overload and it confuses me. If someone is consistently positive or
consistently negative, there's a pattern emerging that if they were
sometimes negative or positive about something, respectively, I would
understand that the signal as a connotation for note-taking. However, if
someone talks in both ways where positive statements are said,
overly-negative statements are said, and overly-sarcastic statements are
said, then it confuses the hell out of me because I'm playing catch up
the whole time. Not only am I supposed to translate the statement at
face value of how things are stated, I have to decipher if the statement
is genuinely positive, overly negative, or overly sarcastic. Overly
negative statements are discard and I have to move forward from them.
Overly sarcastic statements are identified where I have to take the
positive connotations of the hyperbole and twist it so that it's a
negative statement in order to receive the point.
The
amygdala gets really tired from deciphering all these signals and
instead of properly understanding the statements said by an individual, I
can't seem to file these statements fast enough. Instead, positive
statements that do not sting as much as negative statements gets
disregarded with the negative statements because I have grown a high
tolerance for negative statements. This high tolerance of
negative-statement abuse makes it so that positive statements don't seem
to register as much. If a person is naturally negative, negative
statements are the litmus test in order to interpret whether or not if
the next statement or the whole message is consistently negative,
positive, or falsely positive with sarcasm. A falsely positive sarcastic statement makes the equation even worse
because I have to understand that the person is trying to overstate with
hyperbole that something is wrong instead of something is right. Upon
translation, I have to take into connotation that the literal message
that I received is not true and the polar opposite meaning has to be
interpreted.
Positive people have the baseline for
positive messages and positive thinking. Negative people have the
baseline for negative messages and negative thinking. The equilibrium
for an overly-negative mind where some positive thoughts occur is mildly
negative, but I can't take every positive thought that comes out as
literal because of impending false-positive sarcastic doom. If
false-positive sarcasm is involved with negative people who once in a
while say genuinely positive things, positive statements that would
otherwise be interpreted as genuine would be cast aside as "pending to
be translated for negative connotation" because of possible
false-positive sarcasm.
As a result: openly
straightforward positive statements gets translated wrongly with a
negative connotation or message. Negative statements are still
translated as negative statements because of the benchmark for how
negative people think naturally. Falsely positive sarcastic messages
that are blatantly untrue are just a reinforcement that other positive
statements are also untrue and that the opposite has to be interpreted.
Therefore, when a negative person says a majority of negative things
with some genuinely positive messages as well as sarcastic things, his
natural equilibrium is still mildly negative. However, the interpreter
of his words gets mixed up and wrongly accuses him that all his
statements have negative connotation no matter if it's positive or
negative, sarcastic or genuine. In addition to messages that are lost in
translation, all of the interpreted words become nothing to be readily
relied upon because every statement becomes something to ignore and
trash once the amygdala is overloaded, even the genuine positive
messages.
Over time, there is an assumption made that for every large percentage
of negative statements, there is a small chance for genuinely positive
statements, and a sliver of false-positive sarcastic statements. This
assumption is wrong but the amygdala takes these shortcuts when
receiving a message from the same person over time. If an overall
message has percentages where the positive-negative-sarcasm ratio does
not fit the usual template, the mind tends to wander and perceive
genuine messages that are more negative than positive with a hint of
sarcasm. Therefore, it is unfortunate that I do this, but this is why
common messages get misinterpreted.
I don't care if a
person who does this is a good person or has good intentions. It is
supremely difficult to understand that person especially if I'm caught
off-guard having to translate his words. Every time that I am in this
position to interact with this person, it's like a poker game where all
three can be used to intimidate and confuse me -- and I end up folding. I
never liked playing this game of charades where simple events or ideas
are misused at the expense to say an over-the-top negative
interpretation, a rare genuinely positive interpretation, or a
false-positive sarcastic statement. Why can't simple ideas or events be
stated and interpreted literally at face-value without the strain to
energetically move someone with emotion? I can't stand the fact that
someone put all this work in to strongly move me with emotion in one way
or another, but usually negative, just for me to filter all the
negativity and emotion out. I just want factual statements without
over-the-top hyperbole, emotion, or examples so that I have that
capacity to think for myself based on these facts. Emotions reach me
before I can sometimes translate the words and I don't want to be swayed
in one way or another by emotion before deciphering a person's
thoughts; I want to make my own conclusions. I don't want to be told
what to do anymore; I don't want to be told what to think anymore. I
want to think for myself without outside influence and I want to do for
myself based on my own thoughts. I don't want decisions or actions
pre-made and destined for me to follow. I am fully capable for being on
my own where actions and thoughts are done by my own behalf.

major breakthrough
Whenever there’s a major breakthrough, there’s usually others on the same path. Maybe a bit behind, maybe not behind at all.
Isaac Newton and Gottfried Leibniz both invented calculus around 1684.
The theory of evolution was proposed by Darwin, of course, but Alfred Russel Wallace had pretty much the same idea at pretty much the same time. And Alexander Graham Bell and Elisha Gray filed patents for the telephone on the same day.
We call this multiple discovery — the same innovation emerging from different places. Science and invention is riddled with it, but it can also happen in the arts.
We’re all building with the same materials. And sometimes by coincidence we get similar results, but sometimes innovations just seem inevitable.
i invented nothing new
i simply assembled the discoveries of other men behind who were centuries of work. had i worked 50 for 10 or even 5 years before, i would have failed
so it is with every new thing progress happens when all the factors that make for it are ready, and then it is inevitable
to teach that a comparatively few men are responsible for the greatest forward steps of mankind is the worst sort of nonsense -- henry ford

is price needs to cover not just the manufacturing cost, but also the cost of inventing the thing in the first place.
Now let's say a competitor starts manufacturing a copy of the invention. The competitor doesn't need to cover those development costs so his version can be cheaper.
The bottom line: original creations can’t compete with the price of copies.
Copyrights covered media; patents covered inventions. Both aimed to encourage the creation and proliferation of new ideas by providing a brief and limited period of exclusivity, a period where no one else could copy your work.
This gave creators a window in which to cover their investment and earn a profit. After that their work entered the public domain, where it could spread far and wide and be freely built upon.

ideas are a form of property, and this conviction would eventually yield a new term… intellectual property.
we hate losing what we've got. People tend to place a much higher value on losses than on gains. So the gains we get from copying the work of others don’t make a big impression, but when it’s our ideas being copied, we perceive this as a loss and we get territorial.
And lastly, Steve Jobs was sometimes boastful about Apple's history of copying.
But he harbored deep grudges against those who dared to copy Apple.
When we copy we justify it. When others copy we vilify it. Most of us have no problem with copying... as long as we're the ones doing it.

how to light the fire underneath me
everythings a remix part 3
diddy talk
in this life, you gotta take what's yours
Movie Subplots and Takeaways
the learning
Progress is progress. Recently I'm haunted by the feeling that I have a false sense of security that the Great movies, books, and other media that I explored as a youth weren't completely understood back then and only after I got some life experience did the movies fully register in my mind. The hunch was right, I learned a lot
a beautiful mind
in order to have a completely original idea, do not go to class. the solution is in experiences in real life and how social circles evolve to think for themselves in competition as well as a collective whole. do not fall victim to memorizing how others portray the physical world because it's sometimes outdated and wrong. use your own keen eye to examine the world as you see it and then write about that. for other people to deem your work as successful takes too long and you should not wait but keep on striving for greatness
anger management
dictate what your life should be and stop getting tread on by other people who are less qualified than you because you didn't pipe up and they did. be more assertive in life and stop bemoaning stuff about the past that you should or should not have done to result in today's consequences. change for today
back to the future/next/butterfly effect
pure fiction. do not believe that there will be such thing as a time machine to go back and change your past so that you can change your future in a quick fix. there is no such thing as a quick fix and you just have to deal with the consequences that you have today as you see them. do not let others cloud your judgement
basic instinct
just decisions gone wrong. do not let short term benefits dictate long term failures. do not get caught up in the moment. take time off to think and stop being manipulated. figure out all the clues on-hand and do not let lies that sound better than the truth to fool you. gut instincts tell you the truth only if you let them but please pause before continuing forward. register and process all the cues. there are things in life that is there to distract and manipulate you. you must have the time of day to figure out what each individual sign means and how signals are portrayed in order to make out the full picture. do not be blind sighted and please ask all the questions possible without the act of inferencing that something is true. pool and poll all the suspects, friend and enemy, to get the full picture
big daddy/knocked up
sometimes, it takes a kid to prioritize life's goals and decisions. sometimes, it takes a kid for the adult in us to grow up. the struggle is real and even though stammers in speech during trying times and bad actions might reflect poorly on an individual, time is required for someone to mature where some mature slower than others. give people another chance and let their real actions dictate what intentions are real and what actions are fleeting facades
bruce almighty
stop asking someone else for a handout if you have the motivation, goals, aspirations, and correct actions within you to perform your own miracles. you don't need an outside force if progress and actions are dictated by your own ability. do what is right and keep on moving forward in the right direction
capitalism a love story/enron the smartest guys in the room/the one percent
capitalism isn't stated in the united states government. survival of the fittest and competitive drive sometimes deplete a society and the economy because of selfish individual drives to get rich instead of ways to benefit the common good. you need to have the moral accountability among the actions of men to perform at its finest hour. employer-owned companies are the best companies to work for because the workers have a say in how the company is run. the great divide between rich and poor is becoming larger. the rich have been getting richer by the grandfather clause of 22-cent sugar where everywhere else is 7 cents as well as special interest scams to deregulate government policies. 250 billion in taxpayer's money are used to bail out the wrongdoings of enron in 2001 and the banks in 2008. the equalizer is to vote corrupt officials out of office and to demand new litigation against the common side effect of ruthless embezzlement in a capitalistic dog-eat-dog society
eurotrip
sometimes, you don't need all the answers in life to perform tasks and go with the flow. be serendipitous and have interactions in life that will make your experiences richer. being with people outside your natural circle will save you in the long run because there is no conflict of interest. outsiders wont drive you down for the sake of their own advantage in a dog-eat-dog environment. find ways to develop outside interests and hobbies
ferris buellers day off
take time to look around and enjoy the little things in life. face consequences for better or for worse as they come and despite having conflicts and repercussions, you will get through it. you sometimes have luck on your side if you are open minded. say yes to yourself so that other people can say yes. do not say no to yourself before other people have a chance to reply yes or no
goodwill hunting
this is the thesis statement of a lifetime. matt damon wrote the script for his Harvard class, where the main character is a reflection of his life growing up in the Boston area with both MIT and Harvard in his backyard. although he did not graduate Harvard but instead pursued an acting career, the lessons learned and contemplated in order to portray parts of his life on the big screen carried over with him towards his future success.
when you're watching this movie when you're younger, you focused on Will more than the other actors. the whole picture of the struggles and healing process that took place among 3 people created the bigger premise. the math professor were roommates with the psychology professor back when they were undergrad at Harvard. The math professor who teaches at MIT is the culmination of how he was pushed and how he pushed himself to excel to become a field medal winner. The psychology professor (Robin Williams) was the aftermath of self-made decisions gone awry with a wife claimed by cancer and a community college teaching position. Both professors back in their college heyday were excellent in their own right, with the math professor claiming that the psychology professor was talent wasted with the current position that he is in. The two professors squabbled about this for years and the Matt Damon character was introduced to change the paths of all 3 individuals.
Will, the self-taught orphan that surpassed all education taught in Harvard undergrad, solved the math professor's proof and suddenly, the math professor realized that the second coming of Ramanujan was in the midst. All during the math professor's life, he has been lauded with extrinsic rewards of being an accomplished mathematician. however, the accolades did not come naturally and he had to work to achieve those successes, which were great refuge to seek validation in life. With Will being able to solve math proofs so naturally and easily, the math professor soon lost his validation because someone else younger has surpassed him to a point where he could never achieve. The math professor never lost hope but instead tried to create Will in his image where he pushes Will to become a successful individual in the field of mathematics and to find a stable job.
The psychology professor realized that Will and him had similar abusive childhoods and that Will was in a lot of hurt where his emotions and defensive mechanisms got the best of his behavior. Will was unstable to hold a position in a job and that he had no interest to solve something as rudimentary as a math proof that the math professor cannot solve. The struggles of external shame was shared by both the psychology professor and Will because they are both as smart as can be but bad luck and fate intervened when they were growing up. Had circumstances been different and had both of them grew up in better households with loving parents, they would not have suffered through so much pain to get to where they are today. As a metaphor, both of them intrinsically are contempt and ready to take on the world with their talents because they share the same intellectual power but also share the setbacks of their upbringing. The psychology professor can connect to Will on a personal level that the math professor never could where compassion and caring would bring Will out of his mental asylum in order to bring his life new hope.
Will, because of his abusive step father, had a defensive mechanism that would push people away before he got deeply acquainted with them because he was abandoned as a child. His foundation from where he stood was crumbled and he would rather hang out with the street fellows because their brotherhood trust protected his back. In order to emulate how the street Bostonian thought and acted, Will lowered his standards and wanted to work as a construction worker and hitch rides. Will would reveal his intellectualism once in a while for the sake of impressing girls for the crew. He plans to live out his life as an average Joe with the street fellows he once befriended and abandon his intellect just to be accepted as one of them. However, the street fellow pushes Will away and states that if he had Will's intellect, he will get off the streets, choose the higher job, and make a better life for himself.
Meanwhile, the psychology professor cannot outwit Will on an intellectual level because Will read all the books there is to know about everything in the Psych office. Will also argued that half the books the Psych professor had at the office was a waste of time and depicted tame thinking. The psych professor argued back that there is more to life than just reading books and life is worth exploring at one's expense for the sheer pleasure of experience and enjoyment. Life is not made for those who can see danger 20 steps down the line and chooses not to take the road based on hypothetical thought. Regardless of any mistakes that the Psych professor made with his life, he is still content intrinsically because he made his decisions at his own cost and he has no regrets of being coerced into something that he did not want to do like did the math professor.
Both professors are trying to pull Will to their paths because of Will's genius and it truly depends on Will's actions and decisions of what he wants to do next that will dictate his life. Will agreed with the math professor that going for the high-end job is worth his while but chooses last minute to pursue the girl that he was chasing at Harvard who recently moved to Stanford. Taking from both professors, it was important to have a stable job like the math professor but it was ultimately decided that the psychology professor was right for Will making his own decisions that fulfilled his heart. Having the right partner in life is much more rare and worthwhile the effort to pursue than even a high-end job that would be relatively commonplace in comparison. Will slowly lowered his defense mechanism by understanding that the past was not his fault and to have love in his heart. His choice to pursue the girl, where affection was much more important than steady income, was the rational expression to take a chance at your own expense in accord with the psych professor.
The three person struggle indicated that fulfillment based on self decision-making and intrinsic validation of intellect was much more important than a paycheck and extrinsic validation of accolades from other people. The field medal was an extrinsic reward, which meant nothing much to the math professor because he knows that Will can do much more than he ever did. Both the psych professor and Will had a healing process because intellectuals in the face of uncertainty would freeze and not move forward. Having the courage to move on from your past and set forth into the great unknown was the ultimate thesis of the movie because at least you know that intrinsically, you made all the self-fulfilling decisions to act for this life of how you intended.
In the greater scheme of things, Matt Damon made the movie and never turned back. He was in classic films where he had a supporting role as well as lead characters in the bourne trilogy. His career did not atrophy like other actors and still makes decisions on his own behalf even today. This lesson was breathtaking and I did a lot of growing up learning that one needs to not be completely certain in order to make decisions that your heart desires.
inception
over glorified heist movie, use imagination whenever possible to save yourself. think outside the box to solve problems and come up with solutions
rain man
treat people the same as others will treat you. respect other people's values, interests, beliefs, and authorities. do what is right to fight for your rights. as long as you believe in yourself and see things clearly, everything else will fall into place
rounders/40 year old virgin
in life, you have to take chances for better or for worse. you have to face consequences as face value with no cloudy vision. the better you understand the current situation without lying to yourself, the better off you will be able to solve life's problems. never lie to yourself or to others about the current predicament because people are there to help you. by being totally honest with yourself and other people, you will find a way out better and faster than if you lied to yourself. lying makes the situation exacerbated over time by telling the same lies and eventually convincing yourself and others about your falsified current state of affairs. do not lie to yourself or to others, approach conflict if needed, remain true to yourself. if you lie, you either convince others that you are in a better off situation than you actually are, where they can't help you either because they don't know the truth for them to help you solve your situation. if you are a good liar, you end up convincing yourself that you are actually living in your fictional fantasy land and you will rather live out your life in the lie that you created instead of monitoring the actual state of affairs and digging yourself out of the rut. use more of your brain to examine the truth rather than playing yourself in your own facades
the firm
you dictate your life, your career path, and how you want to get paid. if you are caught in a company where you are paid extra to break your morals, you have to find a way out of that company without compromising your own beliefs or future career path. nobody in the company will think for your behalf besides you and it becomes very much a chess game between the novice and the well established. If you can think on your feet to meander out of the situation that you unbeknowningly got yourself in, you will be able to stand on your own two feet without being condemned or go into hiding. figure out what is right for you and don't have others make your choices in your behalf. you control your life and decisions without having someone else or a corporation pigeonholing you with what they judge you as.
the girl next door/the matrix
life is full of fear and new experiences. there are expectations that others place on you to achieve towards higher goals and it seems that the more successful you are, the steeper the climb, and the more drawbacks you will face if you plunge. people are stereotyped and classified to be in certain positions for their roles in life and the tasks in which you are assigned to perform are daunting. the right approach is to have the right mental attitude about things. Do not freeze or overthink and open up to the possibilities of a new approach that changes your perception about life. have a friend or a colleague to break you out of societal roles and have you adapt into a completely new understanding of life. the same decisions and choices over time influence people to be incarcerated by their past where people are stagnant and do not grow in experience or in knowledge. The person who you are trusting must completely change your plane of thought, reasoning, and decision making so that you can improve for the better. there will be growing pains, but you will plow through all setbacks just to pick yourself back up from where you have fallen. As long as you trust that you will have new expectations, goals, achievements, and experiences unveiled to you along your journey, your life is like driving in fog with 10 feet of clearance. The decisions that you chose is to the best of your ability and you will continue venturing forward into this brave new world. Do not let up and good things will arrive before you in unexpected ways as long as your mind is loose with the idea that solutions occur outside the box. Everyone else finds solutions inside the box and those roads are trodden, pilfered, and pillaged a thousand times over. It's time to venture off into the mental wilderness and find the solutions that others have not considered.
the pursuit of happyness
the beautiful struggle to where you expose yourself to how successful people live and operate and you try to salvage and scrounge your way to mimic their lives and careers. expose yourself to the other half as much as possible: seeing is believing is achieving. your exposure to other people's success make your goals that much more vivid. define all the attributes of how success is achievable in your eyes. make sure that the work and sacrifices are worthwhile for your end goal and never let up or let go of your dreams.
the thomas crown affair
you have your career to validate your education but there is something much more valuable than money. rich experiences and someone to share those experiences with is more valuable than money and worldly possessions. please seek a circle of friends who think for your interest as well as in the interest and benefit of the common good. having a wife who believes in you while supporting your ideals and interests will make money and possessions in life seem trivial
the truman show
don't be incarcerated by your past memories, immediate surroundings, decision making patterns, or immediate friends. although aggravatingly difficult, find a way to see through the facade and choose a better life for yourself by your own personal intentions. do not act a certain way because someone is watching -- someone is always watching. do what is right for yourself based on your best judgement regardless of whoever is there to judge or persuade you to change your mind. you are not born and bred just to become a statistical figure or a footnote in history. find a way to be your original true self and not be just one of the sheep following the masses. distinguish yourself by choosing the road less traveled and always remember that you are not living your life, dreams, goals, and ambitions for the sake of someone else. you are living your life and making your decisions on behalf of yourself. you have the ability to change everything if needed.
yes man/secret life of walter mitty
open yourself to the possibility of everything being achievable. do not let up on how small your world is by making artificial barrier of entry for yourself. the barriers are in your mind and do not exist in the real world. find a way to snap out of the sheepish depravity that you define as your life and actually venture off into the world just to live a little. a life left unexamined is not worth living because you have not lived to experience anything
rat race/road trip
rich people don't know what to do with their money. find a cause and donate to it in order for lessen social divide between the less fortunate and the well off. society is driven by people who give and the incentive for giving is that you feel much better when giving than taking -- you also feel prideful with no shame or remorse.

tell the truth. explore if needed. let the wife make the decisions when you're out of ideas. Off Topic: I feel like tom cruise never grew up as an actor because he likes to be portrayed in films that he is comfortable and familiar playing a role in. Tom Cruise got rewards and recognition because he was relatively first in his field. Had Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Cruise switched acting roles in all their movies, Tom Cruise would have been second place or snubbed his whole career like Leo. Only when Leo expanded his horizons and ventured out into an acting role that he was unfamiliar did Leo finally win the Oscar.
